Informed Solutions attend ministerial roundtable on exports

Informed Solutions was invited to represent the views of mid-sized businesses with scale-up and export ambitions at a recent industry roundtable chaired by Baroness Fairhead, Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion.

The roundtable informed Government’s Export Strategy Review, exploring how the UK can better support and encourage British businesses to take advantage of the huge potential to grow through exporting.

Technical Director David Lawton and Communications and Advocacy Manager Matt Baker contributed to the lively and highly productive discussions, in particular highlighting that there is no recognition of mid-sized or scale-up businesses in the current Industrial or Export Strategies.  Informed Solutions thinks this is a highly significant gap, as government’s current focus is exclusively on start-ups (typically a business with less than 3 years of trading) and the very large corporations.

"It was also a great opportunity to remind the Minister of the huge contribution that SMEs make to the UK in terms of innovation, growth and job creation"

David Lawton welcomed this opportunity to have a more balanced dialogue with government, over what Informed Solutions considers to be critically important issues for the UK economy and the continued success of established, growing businesses.

David further offered: “We were pleased to be able to share our thoughts on what needs to be done to create a better global trading environment for UK businesses and we welcome the Department of International Trade’s efforts for organising this.

“It’s important to make the point that we need a modern trade deal, which properly considers the more complex areas that are needed in order to support the knowledge economy, including the protection of intellectual property, the mobility of professionals, fair access to procurement contracts and the elimination of technical barriers to trade.

“It was also a great opportunity to remind the Minister of the huge contribution that SMEs make to the UK in terms of innovation, growth and job creation - SMEs account for almost four fifths of the increase in private sector employment since 2010 - and it’s vital that we have a strong voice in helping shape economic policy moving forward.”

With offices in Manchester, London and Edinburgh, as well as Australian offices in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, Informed Solutions is a Northern Powerhouse Export Champion and has a good history of global trading.   The business was also the only British or Australian company to be recognised with an ICT Excellence Award at this year’s World IT Congress in India.
